One in a Million, Episode 1 - "The Green Card Lottery"
Hi, I'm Karolina and welcome to my podcast, One in a Million! Where I talk about situations that have a low chance of happening.
About the Author
Hi, my name is Karolina. I'm a sophomore in Ms. Millman's Accelerated English II class. I'm in STUNT, NHS, and Peer Jury. I love to read and draw. I also play the clarinet (no, I'm not Squidward). My entire family is Polish and I'm the first person in my family to be born in America. Growing up, I've heard a lot on the struggles my family dealt with to come to America.
America is a nation founded by immigrants. There are several programs dedicated to the sole purpose of allowing immigrants to come to the United States. The Diversity Visa Lottery aka, the Green Card Lottery is very close to my heart. Both of my Babcias won the lottery and immigrated to the United States, it is the very reason why I live in the US. My goal in this podcast is to explain the history of the green card lottery and how the application process works, along with recent controversy surrounding the program. My dad will also stand in as my grandma to tell her experience with the green card lotto.

The Diversity Visa Lottery was first introduced as a bill in Congress in 1986. Though it's original purpose was not to contribute to diversity in the United States, that's what it does today. In 1994, both of my grandma's dragged their families from Poland to the United States on green cards they won.
This is a photo of my Babcia Mania, Dziadzia Tosiek, my brother Patryk and I from some holiday a couple years ago. My Babcia found out about the green card lotto through a work friend in 1992 and immigrated to the United States on June 11th, 1994. I originally interviewed her in Polish.
This is my family on vacation in Michigan last year. My parents immigrated to the US a week apart in June 1994, my mom coming on the 4th and my dad on the 11th. My dad stood in as my grandma in the interview.
This is a green card. My parents' green cards were not green though. They received pink visas.
