What's a DACA?

The Sauce  |  Ep. 1 "What's a DACA?"

Fun fact: These are actually my Aunt and Uncle, Fanny and
David Martinez. Fanny is a DREAMer who graduated summa
cum laude from Dominican and uChicago (she also went to
Fenton). David served in the US Army for 8 years.

The DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, has improved the overall quality of life for many young, law-abiding immigrants. The students who have been able to apply for the DACA have been granted the opportunity of great education and a bright future. Without it, we could be depriving ourselves of a generation that could help shape the world. This podcast will cover the importance of the DACA and give us some insight into what it's like to be  DREAMer.

Mexico is super cool.
Whole milk is the best btw.

Hey! I'm Alfredo! Yeah, it's like the pasta sauce (hence the podcast name). If you were expecting to learn a lot about me here, you'll be kinda disappointed. But what I will tell you is that I come from a (very) proud Mexican household packed full of immigrants who were eligible for the DACA. It greatly improved our lives and I think that it's important to talk about. Oh, and another thing, I really like milk. Anyways, enjoy this very first episode of The Sauce.

Here is Nancy on one of the
pyramids of Teotihuacan.

This is Nancy Martinez (the person I interviewed). She is currently a resident (as of 2014) of the United States. Before this, however, she was an undocumented, single mother of two. She was able to support her children for more than a decade without having any papers. She did not have the opportunity of the DACA early on while she was still in school, but the DACA still helped her acquire a driver's license which made working a lot easier. She now owns her own house where she is raising three children. Oh and, she's also my mom lol.

Enjoy!
